10 Apple Varieties and How to Use Them

If you’re trying to add an apple a day or baking a pie, it’s helpful to know how to use the many varieties of apples found in the produce section.  Today’s post is a list of 10 apple variates and how to use them.

  1. Macintosh – Sweet and juicy, Macintosh apples are good for cooking or making apple sauce. They can be soft, so they aren’t the best eating apple.
  2. Granny Smith – These little green apples are very tart, they are useful with pies, sauce, and cooking but are often eaten as a snack.
  3. Red Delicious – The most common apple I see. Red delicious apples are great for eating or to add on salads. They are not best for cooking.
  4. Golden Delicious – With a sweet taste, these are a multipurpose apple. Use golden delicious apples for sauces, pies, cooking, and snacking.
  5. Honeycrisp – This is one of my favorite varieties. Honeycrisp apples are sweet, juicy, and just the right amount of tart. They can be used for eating and cooking
  6. Stayman – Another one of my favorites! These are sweet and tart and perfect for eating.  You can use Stayman apples for cooking, baking, and on salads. Also known as Stayman Winesap apples.
  7. Fuji – Very sweet, soft, and perfect for apple sauce.
  8. Macoun – Very sweet, great for eating and making apple sauce.
  9. Empire – With a sweet and tart taste, Empire apples are good for eating, baking, pies, sauce, and freezing.
  10.  Gala – A mild sweet flavor is best for eating and on salads.
