Healthy During the Holidays

Thanksgiving will be here before you know it and then followed by cakes and cookies and overindulgence during Holiday Parties. This week Kathy is sharing her tips for enjoying the holiday but healthfully.

With the holidays fast approaching, there are so many things that we need to think about to make the season special.  Don’t forget to take time for yourself and take care of you!  I would suggest manicures, pedicures, massages and stuff to pamper yourself.  More importantly, don’t fall into the holiday weight gain. So many people will gain 5-10 pounds from now until the end of the year.  Holiday parties and all of the cookies that you will find just about everywhere are a major culprit.

Here are just a few ideas to help keep the weight off this year.  First of all, you want to plan ahead.  We can’t always choose what foods are available but we can make sure we make the best choices.  Before you even get to the party, you want to eat something.  I think one of the biggest mistakes that we make is not eating all day because we are going to be eating at the party.  I understand that you want to save your calories for later but that isn’t a good idea.  The problem is that you are so hungry by the time you get to eat, you over do it.  You may want to try having some of sort of lean protein ahead of time. That helps fill you up and lasts longer so you don’t get hungry.  Once again, fill up on the fruits and vegetables.  I also find that having a cup of coffee or tea or maybe a sugar free soft drink can help fill your stomach, leaving less room for more food.  Also, remember that alcoholic drinks can be very high in calories and sugar.    If you want to have a drink, try to limit it to one.

If you are planning the party, look for recipes that are on your food plan.  Nobody needs to know that the ingredients are healthier and you will find people appreciate having alternatives to all of the unhealthy foods.

Don’t forget to get your exercise in.  I know, of all times of the year, finding exercise time is difficult.   Not only does a 30 minute walk help with your cardio but it is also a good stress reliever.  We all could use that.  It is also a great time to get your thoughts together.  Thinking about everything you have accomplished and things that you still need to do.  I will even put voice notes on my phone when I think of something important.

Apple Muffins | Recipe

This apple muffin is AMAZING, its great with a cup of hot tea and perfect for a cool fall day. Recipe will make a dozen muffins.

Apple Muffins

Muffin Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 Cups whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1/4 Cup sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 Teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 Teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 Teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 Teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 Cup apple cider
  • 1/3 Cup olive oil
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 Grated apple
  • 1 Chopped apple, small pieces

 

For topping:

  • 1/4 Cup flour
  • 1/4 Cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 Teaspoon ground allspice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3 Tablespoon olive oil

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Create the topping by mixing all ingredients in a small bowl with a spoon or your fingers.

Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, I like to use a large measuring cup, mix the wet ingredients. Create a well or hole in the middle of the dry ingredient mound and pour the wet mixture into the dry. Mix until combined. Gently fold apple ingredients into the mixture.

In a lightly greased muffin pan, fill each muffin 2/3 of the way full. This should make a dozen muffins. Evenly divide topping between each muffin, sprinkle on top.

Bake in the oven for 20-24 minutes.

Note: Depending on what apples you use, and if you leave the skins on your apples (I do), your muffins may have a green color, but no need to worry, its natural and perfectly fine.
