Workout DVDs

Looking for a great workout but don’t have the time or money to join a gym? Workout DVDs make it possible for you to break a sweat daily without leaving the comfort of your home.  I wanted to share a few videos that I like to use so that if you’re interested, you have somewhere to start.  A good bit of these are available on Netflix instant streaming, if its not there you can rent or buy the DVDs. For these workouts the only equipment needed is a set of hand weights and a mat if you’re working out on a hard surface.

Jillian Michaels – Ripped in 30

This is the most intense workout I have ever done. Jillian’s workouts are no joke and that’s why I love her. After 5 days of blood, sweat, and tears (no kidding), I was making noticeable progress. I could feel my muscles toning and I could feel myself getting stronger. If you’re looking for one video, this is it. The only requirements are a set of 5 pound weights, (she says to have a set of light and heavy weights but I’ve been using the 5 pounders with no problem) and a mat if you’re working out on a hard surface. Oh and of course water.  Jillian works you through a 20 minute video for a week and then you progress to the next level, with one day of rest between. There are 4 levels to the Ripped in 30 workout.  You’ll be yelling at your TV at first, but its okay you’ll get through it. In the words of Jillian “Get Some!”

Jillian Michaels – 30 Day Shred

This workout DVD is a few years older than the Ripped in 30 series but it works. It’s very similar, it includes 3 minutes strength, 2 minutes cardio, and one minute of abs. No breaks are allowed. The stress that you put on your body is what makes change happen. This DVD has 3 levels of intensity. It’s an amazing workout and, if done correctly, the packaging says you can lose 20 pounds in 30 days. Just a warning: in level two she actually says “I want you to feel like you’re going to die”.

Ellen Barrett – Crunch: Super Slimdown – Pilates Yoga Blend

Ellen is a lot less intense than Jillian, she’s serene and happy. Sometimes a workout needs that vibe. I like this video because, although sweat is not pouring from your body as the Ripped in 30, you are working your muscles in the right ways. I will say that mixing this into a week’s workout is amazing. Pilates is all about lengthening and strengthening. This is one of the workouts I used to get in shape for my wedding. If you have Netflix, look for this video on instant streaming.

Ellen Barrett – Crunch: Burn & Firm Pilates

This workout is a little more intense of a Pilates workout but all of the same rules apply; it’s designed to lengthen and strengthen. As with the Super Slimdown, you should be able to find this video on Netflix instant streaming.

Sue Hitzman – Crunch: Boot Camp Training

This is another Crunch DVD. I like this because its a half an hour workout of sculpting and toning. I also get a kick out of the cool down when she says “Nothin’ better than a booty stretch”, what can I say it’s the little things in life that entertain me. This should also be available on the Netflix instant streaming.

Ellen Barrett – Self: Bikini Ready Fast

Ellen is focusing more on strength in this video. It’s a bit longer, about 45 minutes. It’s not as intense as Ripped in 30 but definitely focuses on toning and sculpting. Think of it as another workout to add to the rotation. I would save this for a day that you plan on spending more time working out. The beach background is definitely a plus, it’s beautiful.

As always, make sure you’re in condition to exercise, check with your doctor. Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and don’t forget to have fun. These videos will add variety to your workout regime, with these videos on your TV who needs a gym?

What are some of your favorite workout videos? Do you hit the gym or sweat it out at home? Do you like to yell at the TV I like I do? Share your thoughts below.
