Kathy is joining us this week to talk about the benefits of having a workout buddy and how a it keeps her on track.
When it comes to weight loss, it really comes down to us individually. We are the ones responsible for our own choices, our decisions and what we put in our mouths. We also could use a little support. Many times, we hear of having a partner or “Buddy” when you walk or exercise. It is a great idea. Having someone to talk to while you are walking makes the time go faster. It is also a great way to catch up with your friend. I have found the buddy system works well with my weight loss plan as well. My buddies and I work on a one month schedule. After that month, we can re-evaluate our month and decide if we want to make any changes.
We currently are using this plan. Our particular system is that we all must do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and we agreed to eat at least 3 servings of vegetables a day. We chose these things because, for us, these are the parts of our eating plan that is the hardest thing to follow day to day. Proteins, grains and fruits are the easiest for us to eat. Whether it be a large salad or cooked or raw veggies, we just don’t seem to get enough. This also helps to remind us that we could be eating those raw vegetables as a snack. We share different recipes that include vegetables. Since we do not live close to each other, we aren’t able to walk or exercise together. That is why we made the exercise deal.
When you are dieting alone, many times we say “oh I will just do better tomorrow”. When you have someone that you are buddying with, you feel like you have an obligation to work a little harder. You can encourage your buddy and they will, in turn, do the same for you. We are totally honest with each other and try to help each other at the same time. We talk about different types of exercise and talk about some of our favorite exercise DVDs. Having someone else to share your thoughts and ideas with is a great idea and lots of fun. I have learned so many different helpful hints and I like to share them.
With so many of us wanting to lose weight and be a little more healthy it is just another tool to use for success. Find yourself a buddy and make your own plan. Make sure your plan involves something that is some what of a challenge but not so much that you will not follow through. Keep a positive attitude and enjoy your successes!
