We’ve been discussing eating healthfully can help on the road to weight loss but along with healthy eating comes exercise. Kathy is joining us again this Wednesday to discuss her ideas about exercise and how to get started.
Exercise is such an important part of healthy living. It is the little kick that you need for weight loss and if you aren’t interested in losing weight, it is good for your overall health. No matter what you age or your size, everyone is capable of some sort of exercise. Walking is a great way to get your exercise regime started. Just a small walk can get you on the way to a healthier you. There are a couple of things that you want to do before you begin. First talk to your doctor to make sure you are healthy enough for exercise. It is also important to have a good pair of sneakers when you begin. Once you have your shoes start out with whatever you can handle. Just a walk down the street or around the block. I like to walk at a local middle school. There are a lot of people walking there and depending on the time of year, there are activities at the school that are fun to watch. Watching a soccer game or football practice can help pass the time. I also like to listen to music. An mp3 player is good idea. Download some upbeat music. It is fun to listen to and it can help keep you moving.
If walking is too much to start with you can still do simple things. You can take a couple of soup cans or a couple of bottles of water. Putting one in each hand, just do simple arms lifts. You can do these while sitting and watching TV. You can raise you arms straight out in front of you, maybe bend your arms at the elbows and raising the cans, or hold them above your head and bend your arms back behind over your shoulders. Raising and lowering your legs while sitting is also working on your muscles. You can straighten one leg at a time and lower it down slowly. Do each leg and then try both legs at the same time. Try 5 or 10 of each to begin. Your body really does adapt to exercise. You may think that some things are too difficult but just giving it a try is half the battle. In time, you will be able to do a little more. You will be amazed how quickly you will be able to add a few more reps or exercises.
Keep in mind just a little more activity than you are doing right now is something. I like to add more time to my walk or a few more reps. Don’t be afraid to push yourself. Of course you want to be realistic. You can’t expect to run a marathon when you haven’t exercised for years. Set some goals and work to achieve them. After 4 years, I am still trying to set more goals. I recently ran a 5k. I have walked it in the past and decided to run it this year. I completed it 3 1/2 minutes faster than I did last year and next year, I hope to beat this year. I also alternate my exercise plan with exercise dvds. I like to use them on rainy days and to work on different muscles in my body. There are so many ways to move your body. You want to find something that you really enjoy so you will keep up with it. I would also like to encourage you to try new things. Don’t forget to get your family and friends involved. Everyone will benefit from exercise and you will enjoy their company.
